The University of Saint Louis (USL) held a program celebrating the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary’s (CICM) 162nd Founding Anniversary today, November 22, 2024, at the James Ter Meer Gymnasium, extending its love to the congregation and championing diversity.
Following a Eucharistic Mass, the Louisian community came together to honor the leaders and members of the congregation, recognizing their invaluable contributions and offering heartfelt tributes on stage.
Rev. Fr. Macwayne N. Maniwang, CICM, Ph.D., University President, and Rev. Fr. John Mark D. Barroga, CICM, VPMI/University Chaplain, was joined by several esteemed CICM fathers and members, including Rev. Fr. Hirohito Bolo Jr., CICM, Provincial Superior of the Philippines; Rev. Fr. Yohanes Silalahi, Novice from Indonesia; Rev. Fr. Nolas Sitolo, Parish Administrator from Allaguia, Pinukpuk, Kalinga; Rev. Fr. Fernold Denna, Rector of CICM Theological Seminary; Rev. Fr. In addition, the program showcased a wide range of performances from the diverse Louisian community, featuring USL’s talented student body, foreign exchange students from the AFS Intercultural Program, and exchange students from Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), Indonesia.
Past and present CICM scholars of the university, Mr. Aldwin Tuliao and Ms. Erica Ranjo, respectively, as well as Mr. Alan Anthony D. Baccay, MARS, Christian Faith Education Department Head, shared their tribute messages as beneficiaries of the scholarship program of the congregation.
Mr. Tuliao shared how CICM played a crucial role in easing his financial burden as a student, and he expressed heartfelt gratitude for their support, allowing him to become the person he is today. “I stand here as a living testament to the power of your kindness and your unwavering commitment to your mission,” he shared.
As a current student scholar, BSEd-SocSci 4 student Erica expressed her admiration for the CICM Missionaries, likening them to heroes. She acknowledged the immense sacrifices they make, including leaving their families, missing important occasions, and foregoing personal happiness for the sake of the CICM foundation.
“They go to different places, where they set aside their own needs to serve humanity. Because of this, they are true heroes,” Erica remarked.
Mr. Baccay also conveyed his appreciation for the community that has dedicated itself to love, compassion, and hope. “It is with immense gratitude that this congregation reflects accomplishments, and we are united in the selflessness and dedication that exemplify the true spirit of service,” he expressed.
In response to the tribute, Fr. Barroga expressed their gratitude on behalf of CICM. “It is not only an honor but a testament to the mutual respect and collaboration in our commitment to serve the community,” he conveyed.
“The CICM has always believed in the transformative power of education as a vehicle to empowerment and social prestige,” Fr. Barroga added. This acknowledgment reinforces CICM’s commitment to continue making a positive impact through education.
Now in its 162nd year, this milestone exemplifies the enduring commitment of CICM in fostering excellence in education and spiritual growth.
The Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM) marks its founding anniversary on November 28, when its statutes were approved by Engelbert Cardinal Sterckx in 1862. Founded by Théophile Verbist, a diocesan priest, the CICM has since been dedicated to serving communities worldwide through its missionary work.
