Nard Bryan B. Valdez, BSCE-4 student from the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (SACE) bagged fifth runner-up in the RCA Contracting and Trading Regional Chess Tournament held on October 20, 2024 at Robinsons Place Tuguegarao.
Among more than 150 participants, Valdez battled his way through tough matches using the Swiss system format to secure a well-deserved 5th runner-up finish. His dedication, smart tactics, and passion for the game were on full display in every round, showing exactly why he is the one leading the team.
Other fearless Louisian participants who stepped up to the challenge include John Lester M. Copuyoc (BSGE-3), Sarah Joy R. Soriano (BSGE-3), Ullyses Stephen Louis B. Baccay (BSCE-3), and Leomhar F. Guillermo (BSCE-2).
In addition, these players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the university for sponsoring them to such an event and giving them a chance to shine. They, too, are especially grateful to Sir Allan Anthony D. Baccay, CFEd Department Head, who served as their coach, and to Ma’am Mirelle Jean A. Caronan, Center for Sports Development Director, whose constant encouragement made the tournament a reality.
It was a day filled with strategic battles and friendly competitions in the open non-master division, organized by Linar S. Agustin, and exclusively for the brave souls of the region.
Congratulations for bringing not just skill to the board, but a whole lot of heart, proving that chess is more than just a game of moves—it is a test of courage, focus, and determination.
