4 USL alumni hailed as Cagayan Outstanding Youth Award honorees

The University of Saint Louis (USL) continues to uphold its culture of excellence, as four distinguished alumni were hailed as four of the ten Cagayan Outstanding Youth Award (COYA) honorees.

The Provincial Government of Cagayan conferred the awards to Ms. Sharlotte A. Ferrer, Mr. Dominic L. Danao, Mr. Cyd Jesper C. Danguilan, and Mr. John Vincent A. Ciubal in a ceremony held on August 31, 2024.

Ar. Danao shared that he never envisioned his path as an architect to lead him to public service, but it eventually became a calling that transformed his professional and personal life. He was selected as a COYA awardee as a result of his community-driven initiative, “Project KINAADMAN,” which seeks to address educational gaps in communities, as well as his contributions to parish projects and numerous volunteer works.

“I yearned for a path that would allow me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. I am proud to use my skills as an architect to serve the public good, creating spaces that bring people together and enrich our community,” shared Ar. Danao.

BSED-English graduate Ms. Ferrer also extended her gratitude for the recognition. “For me, volunteerism has always been about giving selflessly, without seeking recognition or rewards. However, this award offered a meaningful opportunity to not only acknowledge the hard work of young leaders but also to inspire others to join the cause,” remarked Ms. Ferrer.

Ms. Ferrer, who is the founder and president of the Cagayan Youth Advocates, champions the rights and welfare of the indigenous people, advocates for animal welfare, and empowers women and youth with the organizations’ projects implemented within the province, especially in its far-flung areas.

In like manner, Mr. Danguilan prompted various programs aligned to education and youth development, including a series of initiatives catering to the needs of the youth in his barangay, Camasi, Peñablanca. He also imparted his skills and services to the Aeta communities by involving them in various programs celebrated monthly.

“This award is for the people who believe in the power of good governance and volunteerism because I am equipped with USL’s core values, driven by the mission of its congregation and built through one heart and soul,” expressed Mr. Danguilan.

Building on these impactful efforts, Mr. Ciubal emphasized a message to the youth: “Don’t underestimate the value of your volunteerism.” Through his diverse projects, he has exemplified a commitment to fostering positive change within communities. From facilitating interfaith sessions for Children in Conflict with the Law, to empowering Agta children through the arts, and leading seminars for youth development, his efforts have made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals.

“To my fellow young Cagayanos, I urge you to step up and contribute to nation-building. Let’s create a future filled with hope and a generation dedicated to service. Know that you have a role to fill. Lead boldly, lead wisely, and never lose sight of the impact you have,” he concluded.

The prestigious accolade attests to the impact and contributions of the university’s graduates to the community and to the excellence and dedication instilled in the USL’s education. The Louisian community takes great pride in the achievements of these outstanding individuals.
