The University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT) Guidance and Counseling Center has successfully carried out the first phase of Project PAMANA (Providing Assistance in Mental Health Awareness and Intervention through Nurturing Extension Activities), a component of the HOPE (Holistic Outreach, Partnership, and Extension) Program. This activity reflects the university’s commitment to advancing mental health awareness and intervention among students and the broader community.
The initial phase of Project PAMANA was conducted in two parts. Phase 1A, which took place on March 14, 2025, focused on a needs assessment through the use of the Problem Checklist for Adolescents and the Mental Health Inventory. This was followed by Phase 1B, which occurred at Allaguia National High School in Pinukpuk, Kalinga on April 4, 2025. The focus of Phase 1B was collaborative planning for interventions, including a seminar on mental health awareness aimed at equipping Senior High School students with essential knowledge about mental health, its significance, and strategies for maintaining overall well-being.
A key highlight of the seminar was an in-depth discussion on “Breaking the Stigma: Why It’s Okay to Talk About Mental Health,” facilitated by Mr. Jenikko L. Quinto, SHAS Guidance Counselor. This session aimed to foster a culture of openness and understanding among students, encouraging them to seek support and break free from the misconceptions surrounding mental health issues.
Further enriching the experience, Ms. Jade Michelle C. Pabalinas, Basic Education School Psychometrician, and Ms. Trisha Anne T. De Los Santos, College Psychometrician, led the feedback-giving session on the results of the assessment tools, which provided participants with deeper insights into their mental health status. This session served as a valuable opportunity for self-reflection and awareness, allowing students to recognize personal challenges and areas for growth.
Beyond the informative discussions, the activity featured interactive group dynamic activities facilitated by the Guidance Counselors. These activities were designed to enhance students’ problem-solving and collaboration skills, fostering teamwork as they worked toward common goals. Additionally, participants were guided in developing personalized mental health strategies, equipping them with practical approaches to managing stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being.
Following the seminar, assessment, and group dynamic activities, a crucial planning session spearheaded by the Guidance Director, Mrs. Ma. Haydee C. Guillermo, with the community comprising students, teachers, and the school administration. This planning session was based on the results of the mental health assessments and the verbalized needs of the school community. Through collaborative discussions, the community identified areas where support was needed, and specific mental health intervention strategies were developed to address these needs in a holistic manner.
In line with the university’s commitment to holistic support, the Guidance Team also distributed hygiene kits and school supplies to the students. These provisions aim to address their personal well-being and academic needs, ensuring they are better prepared to face their daily challenges both in school and in life.
Project PAMANA was led by the project leaders, Ms. Maria Elizabeth T. Lacambra and Mr. Marcial B. Uru. Moreover, this activity was conducted in collaboration with the Community Engagement and CICM Advocacies (CECA) Office.
The successful implementation of Project PAMANA’s first phase marks a significant step in USLT’s ongoing mission to provide comprehensive guidance, counseling, and outreach services. With more phases to follow, the Guidance and Counseling Center remains dedicated to promoting mental health awareness, fostering resilience and empowering students to thrive.
Stay tuned for the next phases of Project PAMANA, as the USLT Guidance and Counseling Center continues its advocacy for mental health awareness and support in various communities.
