Two student teams from the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (SACE) department were hailed as champion and first runner-up in the HackForGov Cyber Range Exercises Competition at the Claude Andrews Convention Center, Cagayan State University – Andrews Campus, held on August 29, 2024, with the theme “Today’s Generation, Tomorrow’s Champion: Shaping the Future of Cybersecurity through Shared Responsibility.”
The team “Northern Lights,” comprising Matt Genesis E. Fajardo, Jacob S. Ong, Jhadz C. Ignacio, and Xygfrid Dante L. Abella, BSCS students from the ITE Department, emerged as the champion under the guidance of their coach, Dr. Benedict D. Sy.
Meanwhile, the team “USL-CpE,” consisting of Henley A. Pronoso, Rhein Angelo Q. Onza, Jerry A. Pasicolan, and Chester John L. Tanguilan, CpE students from the Computer Engineering Department, secured the first runner-up position with Dr. Jay Ventura serving as their coach.
The two winning teams were among the staggering number of participants, having eight Higher Education Institutions and State Universities and Colleges, 28 National Government Agencies within the region, and the Local Government of Tuguegarao.
The event was organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology Region 2, under the leadership of Engr. Pinky T. Jimenez, PECE, Ph.D., Regional Director.
The outstanding achievements of the students and their coaches not only bring pride to their department but also underscore the critical role of young talents in shaping the future of cybersecurity. As the competition theme suggests, today’s generation is indeed stepping up as tomorrow’s champions in safeguarding the digital environment.
