Louisian employees oriented on data privacy

The University of Saint Louis (USL) conducted a seminar on Data Privacy Awareness on November 26, 2024, at the Bulwagang Teodulfo Domingo, equipping all USL employees with knowledge and understanding of their responsibilities in safeguarding individuals’ data rights within the university.

The seminar featured sessions led by data protection experts from Saint Louis University (SLU), Baguio City.

The morning sessions began with an introduction to the Fundamentals of Privacy and an Overview of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 by Dr. Cecilia A. Mercado, Data Protection Officer. Dr. Mercado emphasized the importance of careful data processing and adherence to the principles of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality. “We become aware of how we need to protect the data,” she stated, adding that privacy is a shared responsibility across the university.

In the afternoon, Ms. Maria Conception Clemente, Assistant Data Protection Officer, delivered a talk on Data Protection Practices. She highlighted the significance of mutual respect for privacy, stating, “If you want your privacy to be respected, it is a basic human right to respect others.” She also addressed the role of proper information flow in ensuring data protection.

The seminar concluded with a lecture on Data Privacy and Cybersecurity in Practice, presented by Mr. Willy Olivete, a staff member of the Data Protection Office. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in preventing data breaches, highlighting real-world examples to illustrate the impact of human error and the value of upholding a culture of privacy awareness in the university.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which emphasizes promoting transparent, accountable institutions and ensuring access to justice for all. By equipping employees with knowledge on data privacy and cybersecurity, USL fosters trust, ethical practices, and respect for individual rights.
