A team of Senior High School students from the University of Saint Louis exhibited an innovative device that is prompted to remind its users of their on-time medication during the 2024 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Expo of the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs held on September 7-8, 2024, at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Crhys Antony Y. Reyes, Rhodwhin O. Cortez, Kobe Lean P. Orteza, Nathan Icezaac O. Leal, and Jerah Querelle P. Agullana, with their mentor, Mr. Joseph Celoso, introduced “Pill Perfect,” a smart pill box organizer made from 3D-printed biodegradable polylactic acid that sends consistent reminders for its users to take their prescribed medicine at the set particular intervals of time.

According to the team, the device “features a built-in timer that helps with keeping track of when its user needs to take their medication, as well as a display that shows the time and an alarm that rings once this timer reaches zero. Aside from these, an interface for setting the time as well as an integrated wifi module will allow the device to send a notification directly to the designated user of the machine.”

The device seeks to aid patients with regular maintenance, individuals with complex medication regimens, caretakers of aforementioned beneficiaries, and hospitals.

Recognizing that there is much room for improvement, the team aims to develop and integrate additional features for seamless device usage. Planned developments include a weight monitoring system to alert users if the device is out of a certain medication, an advanced display to enhance its user-friendliness, and a dedicated application to augment the device’s technological capabilities, among others.

The Basic Education School (BES) recently launched the celebration of Science Month, featuring an exciting opportunity for students to engage in various activities that promote scientific knowledge.

BES students and faculty members opened the month-long celebration on September 2, 2024, in a program held at the Elementary Quadrangle for the CAPABLE Louisians and a televised program in the classrooms for the Junior High School and Senior High School students.

The celebration offers a diverse line-up of activities aimed at strengthening the scientific values and skills among students, as well as showcasing their innovations and creations. Several activities will test the students’ creativity, including art contests, an exhibit, an eco show, and a photo story contest. Additionally, students will be challenged with a variety of brain-stimulating events, such as the GENYO Quizzers’ Showdown, library-related quiz bees, a seminar-workshop, and a series of olympiads covering various branches of science.

Mr. Marvin C. Baccay, Science Area Head, shared that “Science Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of the science community to inspire and inform pupils and students of the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).”

With the theme “BES is Back to BASICS: Building an Authentic, Sustainable, and Innovative Culture of Science,” Science Month encourages students to revisit the roots and reconnect with the fundamental principles that underpin advancements in STEM. The theme emphasizes the value of simplicity, sustainability, and genuine innovation and stresses the importance of cultivating a strong foundation in basic skills and knowledge as a foundation for complex ones.

Mr. Baccay spearheads the organization of the celebration with the assistance of the Young Enthusiasts of Science Club and STEM-H and STEM-NH Councils.
