The international student internship exchange program between the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT) and the Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) is a dynamic platform for bridging cultures and educational principles. By engaging in this program, students gain first hand exposure to diverse instruction, methodologies, and practices, enriching their education experience beyond boundaries. More than just academic relations, this endeavor boosts intercultural competence, providing participants with the tools to navigate and excel in global development.
The Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia is a testament to this dedication. This program empowers students academically and culturally as they are immersed in diverse environments. This year, three (3) UNESA pre-service teachers, Marisca Wahyu Anita, Gita Ayu Permatasari, and Lutfi Aluna Sagita, share their experiences in the Philippines, recounting the lessons learned, cultural exchanges, and personal growth attained.
A Transformative Academic Journey
Marisca Wahyu Anita, a Physical Education, Health, and Recreation major, was drawn to the exchange students program for its potential to enhance her teaching skills. “By joining this program, I hope to improve my teaching skills, particularly in dealing with a more diverse educational environment,” she shared. For Gita Ayu Permatasari, a 4th-year English Education student, the program offered her a platform to explore innovative teaching methods. “[I believe that] immersing myself in a new culture and educational system will foster my adaptability, problem-solving abilities, and intercultural competence,” she remarked.
Lutfi Aluna Sagita, an Elementary Education student, saw the exchange as a chance to gain practical insights. “I want to gain new insights into education, especially learning how to teach, which will be invaluable to my future career,” she explained. Each student highlighted how the Philippines’ emphasis on Detailed Lesson Plans (DLP) and creative teaching strategies stood out.
Embracing Cultural Diversity
For these students, the Philippines was an academic destination and a cultural haven. Marisca was captivated by the vibrant traditions and warm hospitality, while Lutfi was touched by Filipinos’ genuine interest in understanding her culture and religion. Gita found similarities between Indonesia and the Philippines but marveled at the rich historical influences that shaped Filipino traditions.
Each student eagerly embraced opportunities to exchange cultural practices. Lutfi and Gita introduced their Filipino peers to Indonesia’s iconic batik art, which has intricate patterns and deep cultural significance. “I was very happy because they were very enthusiastic and curious about the batik that I gave,” Lutfi recounted. Meanwhile, Marisca sparked interest in Indonesian films, showcasing cinema as a window into her nation’s cultural tapestry.
Obstacles and Triumphs
Despite the enriching experiences, the journey was not without its challenges. Language barriers occasionally tested their adaptability. “[Although] sometimes I have language constraints because students speak Tagalog, I still try to understand what they are talking about,” said Lutfi. Marisca faced four (4) consecutive typhoons but described the experience as humorous and character-building.
These challenges, however, only underscored the resilience and determination of these students. Gita cited, “It did not dampen my spirits or hinder my overall positive experience here.”
A Lasting Impact
As their Philippine journey concluded, the practice teachers returned home with new skills and a renewed sense of purpose. Marisca is eager to implement the DLP techniques she admired, while Gita plans to integrate cultural lessons into her English teaching. Having observed diverse student behaviors and teaching styles, Lutfi aims to foster a more inclusive classroom environment in Indonesia.
Their reflections indicate a shared sentiment that the exchange program is not just about academic learning but about building bridges across cultures. These young educators have become ambassadors of understanding, showcasing the transformative power of education and cultural exchange.
Through their stories, we are reminded that global direction is a privilege and a responsibility that enriches individuals and strengthens ties among nations. As the SEA Teacher program continues to grow, so does its legacy of shaping future leaders who value diversity and unity.
