BES opens Reading Nook in celebration of National Reading Day

The Basic Education School (BES) of the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT) officially opened its Reading Nook initiative on November 26, 2025, in celebration of the National Reading Day on November 27, 2025. The activity highlights the school’s continuing efforts to strengthen literacy among young learners in the Elementary Department.

The program began with opening remarks from Ms. Liza P. Maquera, MAEd, English Area Head. She emphasized that creating dedicated reading areas in classrooms supports students’ confidence and curiosity, reinforcing the school’s commitment to holistic development and inspiring pride among staff and parents in these efforts.

Dr. Darwin F. Dumlao, Assistant Principal for Administration and Student Services, followed with an encouraging message. He recognized the importance of school-wide programs that promote literacy and expressed appreciation for the initiative. He also stated that the Reading Nook project supports the department’s goal of helping learners grow academically and personally.

Mr. Ajie C. Dagohoy, Jr., Filipino and Mother Tongue Area Head, also addressed the attendees. He emphasized the importance of reading in developing language skills, particularly in Filipino and Mother Tongue. He shared that the Reading Nook will give learners greater access to a variety of texts that reflect their culture, identity, and experiences.

Every classroom in the Elementary Department now has its own reading area. Each nook features books on many subjects that suit the reading level of the pupils. The design of these areas aims to make reading a comfortable and enjoyable part of everyday classroom life.

The Reading Nook project is a collaborative effort between the English Area and the Filipino Area. Through this partnership, the BES department affirms its commitment to creating engaging learning environments that foster curiosity, comprehension, and a lasting interest in reading, making stakeholders feel integral to this shared goal.

The university congratulates the Elementary Department for launching this meaningful literacy program and encourages learners to make reading a daily habit.
