In their ongoing commitment to enhancing the accounting skills of Senior High School (SHS) students from remote communities, first-year BS Accountancy students from the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT), under the guidance of their professor, Mr. Jerome D. Marquez, launched the PROJECT ABM SHS Tutorial Activity (PROJECT ASTA).
This service-learning initiative, held on March 28, 2025, at Amulung National High School (Set 1) and San Vicente Institute of Solana, Inc. (Set 2), aimed to equip ABM students with foundational knowledge to prepare them for their college accountancy journey.
Through interactive teaching strategies, the first-year students encouraged logical thinking, accurate analysis, and essential life skills such as patience and time management. They incorporated engaging activities to ensure a fun and meaningful learning experience.
In the morning, the students from Set 1, accompanied by Mr. Marquez, arrived at Amulung National High School in Amulung, Cagayan, where they were warmly welcomed by Mrs. Aileen Maluban-Batan, the Grade 11 ABM Adviser.
The program began with an activity on cash and cash equivalents, designed to encourage interaction and active participation among the students before moving on to the discussion. An intermission number, performed by selected Set 1 students, was held to keep the students entertained and engaged in the program before continuing with the bank reconciliation discussion. Seatwork was also assigned to the students after the topic discussions.
Meanwhile, Ms. Erica Pascua, an alumna of Amulung NHS, delivered an inspiring message, reminiscing about her SHS journey and her experiences at USLT.
To conclude the event, a recognition program was held to recognize the top scorers of the activities, who received cash prizes and certificates. Prizes were also awarded to students who actively participated. After the program, students had photo opportunities and expressed their enjoyment and gratitude for the valuable learnings and for bringing the program to their community.
In the afternoon session, Set 2 students, along with Mr. Marquez, arrived at San Vicente Institute of Solana, Inc., in Solana, Cagayan, where they were warmly welcomed by their principal, Mrs. Eleanor Canapi, faculty members, and students. The program featured an engaging teaching experience with entertaining student hosts, interactive discussions, and academic challenges, complemented by refreshments for both the mind and body.
The event concluded with a quiz bee covering cash and cash equivalents, petty cash funds, and bank reconciliation. Participants were recognized for their enthusiasm and efforts, with winners receiving special acknowledgment.
Students expressed their appreciation for the program, highlighting its impact on their understanding of accounting concepts. One student shared, “Actually, wala talaga kaming alam sa mga diniscuss niyo, siguro 1/8 knowledge lang before.” Another added, “Thank you rin! Sana next time ulit (HAHAHAHAHA). Mas nagets kasi namin because of you (all).”
In his closing remarks, Mr. Marquez expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, emphasizing the collective effort in making learning an enriching and rewarding experience.
