K-12: The USL High School Experience
Sometime April this year, 2012, the Department of Education (DepEd) issued DepEd Order No. 31, s. 2012, stating that “Effective School Year (SY) 2012-2013, the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) shall be implemented starting with the roll-out of Grades 1 and 7 in all public elementary and secondary schools. Private schools are enjoined to do the same. They may further enhance the curriculum to suit their school vision/mission.”
With this development, the High School Department of the University of Saint Louis (USL) adhered to this order and introduced grade 7 to the department.
In an interview with Miss Mary Ann Baquiran, MAEd, the principal of USL High School department, she said that the K to 12 BEC is already being implemented. The two curricula of the High School, the Science Curriculum and the Enriched Academic Curriculum, have adapted to the program of DepEd, with minor modifications like the implementation of longer time for different subjects thus making instruction more enriched. Another is the add-on subject Science Research I for the former curriculum.
The principal also said that the teachers were ready for the implementation of the program. The administrators, subject area heads and the grade 7 teachers of the department attended seminars, trainings and summits such as the Division (Tuguegarao City) Mass Training and those organized by FAPE (Fund for Assistance to Private Education) and some book companies.
The High School department continually sends teachers to seminars to address the issue on K-12.
K to 12 Program
The K to 12 Program comprises kindergarten, primary education of six years, junior high school of four years, and senior high school of two years. It is aimed for the mastery of basic concepts and skills in preparation for higher education, employment and entrepreneurship. The program also seeks to place the Philippine Education System at par with international standards.
The key aspects of the program include the incorporation of kindergarten (as per mandated in Republic Act. No. 10157, “An Act Institutionalizing the Kindergarten Education into the Basic Education System and Appropriating Funds Therefor”), the use of the mother tongue in instruction for kindergarten to grade 3, the intensification of core academic areas (Math, Filipino, English, Araling Panlipunan, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, and Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health [MAPEH]), and the introduction of specializations which will occur on the student’s senior high school.
